It’s summer!!!!! By now you’ve probably already turned in your keys and turned off your brain because you have bigger things to worry about like where is your family vacation going to be this year, what projects do you want to tackle this summer, or is this the summer that you finally get in the shape of your life. Like the good teacher you are, you will use this time to relax and enjoy yourself, but also prepare for the upcoming school year. Now you’re probably thinking, how exactly do I balance my time this summer between enjoying myself while also preparing for next year? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Enjoy Summer Break

The most important thing you need to do this summer is to actually take a summer break. Even if you have a busy summer schedule, you need to take time out of each day for yourself and your family. The school year is a stressful and busy time packed with a to-do list that’s a mile long forcing you to miss out on some of the things you love to do.  Summer is the perfect time to catch up on these things and refresh your mind for the upcoming year. Annie Condron of TeachHUB writes that teachers should go out and enjoy the outdoors. Condron suggests getting back into an exercise routine like walking, biking, jogging, or playing outside with your kids. So maybe it’s time you blow the dust off those running shoes and enjoy the sun!

Prepare for the upcoming year

Now I know the last thing you want to do is think about school but, if you do a little bit here and there, you will be thanking yourself in August (you know I’m right). Condron mentions later on in her article that teachers should take a few hours a week to think about the school year ahead and prepare any way they can whether it’s the first few lessons or a DIY project for your classroom setup. Also, begin to think about stocking up on any supplies you may need for the year like pencils, paper, lanyards, or even printer ink.

Make a creative class ID

The first few weeks of school are a fun and confusing time. You and your students are meeting lots of new people which can make it hard to remember faces and names. Class ID badges are a handy tool for both you and your students to get to know one another and also gives you an opportunity to show off your creative side. With IDville’s ID Maker 3.0 Software, you will have the power to design your own ID cards and print them out in minutes with one of our systems. So instead of placing an order to some company that prints out generic ID badges, you can customize your own badges and put a unique spin on them. For example, you could put the students name, picture, and a fun fact so they can all get to know each other better. Not only will this benefit you and your students, it will also make it easier for other teachers and assistants around the school to identify a student and figure out which class they belong to.

Conclusion

Remember, this summer you should actually try to enjoy the summer. I know it’s easier said than done but seriously, chill. That being said, take a few hours out of each week to prepare for the upcoming year and develop your professional skills. Finally, think of ways to break the ice with your students and get to know each other.
