Another Successful SHRM Conference!

The dust has settled on another great year at the SHRM 2014 Annual Conference and Exposition and we can honestly say it was another great show! What an amazing event to be a part of and what an honor to be able to network with so many great professionals in the world of human resources! 

IDville participated as an exhibit sponsor for the fourth year in a row June 22 – 24 in Orlando, FL. We were able to talk with over 1,600 Human Resources professionals to see how identification is handled in their workplaces. 

SHRM was such a great opportunity to see current customers’ excitement about the success of their ID Maker® systems and to chat with others whose buildings are looking for a security upgrade through the use of ID badges. 

Some of the excitement of SHRM was, of course, watching people’s excitement to receive one of our badge accessory favorites – “bling” lanyards. Booth visitors also took part in games and raffles to win other great prizes, including a FREE ID Maker Value System

All-in-all SHRM 2014 was a great success. We’re so thankful to be able to get out of the office and meet some of our loyal customers and help others to create a secure environment for their team members. And of course, we’re already looking forward to SHRM 2015 in the sparkling city of Las Vegas!

School Safety in the Spotlight

As parents, we’re endlessly concerned with our children’s safety, especially while under someone else’s supervision. Reasonably, the focus of many parents and school administrators, especially in the past year, has shifted to beefing up security in school districts nationwide.
 
Despite recent economic and government financial struggles parents, school staff and communities have been pushing for stronger security measures in schools. Not only has more attention been paid to this, in many school districts more funds are being allocated to this very important cause. As part of the overall academic mission, an increase in funding dedicated to school safety allows schools to maintain a peaceful and beneficial environment for their students.
 
According to ReminderNews in Connecticut, the state has released grant monies totaling $21 million to the state’s school districts to ramp up security. A total of 604 schools in Connecticut will benefit from these funds. Tips for Taking a Great ID Badge Photo

If you’re anything like me, you don’t necessarily look forward to having your picture taken, especially for things like the dreaded driver’s license photo. Right up there with that (or possibly worse) is a picture for an ID badge. Think about it – your driver’s license stays in your wallet, tucked away from the eyes of your friends and coworkers. On the other hand, many companies require that team members display their ID badge, for all eyes to see!

There are a few simple things to keep in mind that will make having a photo taken for an ID badge as painless as possible. Given that fellow team members, customers and other company partners will be seeing the photo on your ID badge on a regular basis, you’ll want to make sure to looking your best in that photo.

Below is some advice for you and your ID badge “photographer” that will help you to put your best foot forward in your ID badge photo. 

For the Subject:

    Make sure to wear a flattering top that will look great in the photo. Avoid bright colors, big patterns and anything taupe, bright white or nude – these selections may wash you out or be distracting in a photo, especially when taken under fluorescent lights. I suggest sticking to darker colors (black, navy or dark blues and greens) or softer tones (soft whites, blues, greens, purples, etc.).

    A large part of looking your best for your photo is ensuring that your hair is neatly styled and away from your face. 

    You may want to make sure no one is watching you, but be sure to practice your smile in the mirror. You’ll want your smile to be natural and relaxed – don’t smile too big or too small. If you decide you don’t want to smile at least relax your face to avoid looking tense or angry.

    This seems like a no-brainer, but make sure to look at the camera. You’d be surprised how many ID photos are taken with the subject looking to the side or above the camera.

    Relax yourself – especially your face – when “posing” for your photo.

For the Photographer:

    Look for a place that has good lighting to take your team’s ID badge photos. The photo subject’s face should be seen clearly and any lights you use should be at least 3 feet away from the subject. This way the light isn’t in the picture and doesn’t cast a shadow or cause the subject to squint.

    A plain background, such as the one provided with our ID Maker Systems, is always best for any ID badge photos. A wall that’s painted in a neutral tone or a backdrop in white, beige or light blue will result in the best photos. Your subject should then stand roughly one foot in front of the wall/backdrop to avoid shadows.

    Talking to your subjects before taking the photos will help them relax, resulting in a better ID badge photo.

    Turning on autofocus and auto flash in your camera settings will help you take the best possible photos of each team member with ease.

    Consider investing in a tripod to steady the camera – keeping it still and level while taking ID badge photos.

    Adjust camera height and angle as necessary so that just the subject’s head and shoulders are framed in the photo.

    If you don’t like the photo you take, the team member probably won’t either. Review each photo after it’s taken so you’ll know before printing the ID badge if you should take another.

Set Yourself Apart With Great Customer Service

Coming down from the recent high of Customer Service Week, I’ve started to think a lot about the impact great service has on our everyday decisions about where we’ll spend our money. Although I am a bargain hunter, I’m willing to pay a little extra if it means getting better customer service.

This brings to mind a disappointing experience at some jewelry stores a few years back. As my husband and I walked into the first store, not one associate looked up from what they were doing to even say hi or let us know they would be right with us. Being advocates of receiving great service where you spend your money, we promptly left that store and entered a second, only to receive the same treatment – no treatment.

Understandably, we were beginning to get frustrated until we walked into the third store. Although each associate was assisting a customer, one looked up and said hello and yet another let us know that she would be with us in just a few minutes. This was more like it! Once our associate finished up with her current customers she came right over and gave us her undivided attention (with the exception of saying “hello” to other customers) for over an hour! My husband ultimately had the final say and a few months later, I was happy to learn that he had chosen to purchase a beautiful ring from the jeweler “with a personality”.

Every single jewelry purchase since has been from the same company and I can honestly say I don’t think we’ll ever go anywhere else!
