Keep It Clean...

If you own an ID card printer, regardless of what brand or manufacturer, it’s important to make sure your printer is being cleaned on a consistent basis. Most ID card printer manufacturers suggest a cleaning every 700-1,000 prints to keep your printer running smoothly.

Much like getting the oil changed in your car, this routine maintenance on your ID card printer will help keep it running efficiently and will ultimately extend the life of your printer. Using a printer cleaning kit will remove the dust, dirt and lint from the inside of the printer.

Not cleaning an ID card printer regularly can lead to a buildup of debris on the print head, which may damage it and leave white streaks across your ID cards. The typical cost to replace that print head is around $500. On the other hand, a printer cleaning kit will likely cost less than $50 and it will only take a few minutes of your time to get your printer cleaned, protecting the valuable investment you made in your ID card system

IDville has printer cleaning kits for every major ID card printer manufacturer. In comparing the cost of maintaining your printer through using our printer cleaning kits to the cost of buying an entirely new ID card printer, the solution is obvious. We also feature quantity discounts on our cleaning kits so you can stock up and save.

If you’ve never cleaned your printer and need some assistance, you can contact our system specialists at 866.438.4553 and they’ll help you protect your investment by walking you through the cleaning process.

Printer Ribbons: Just like there are many printers to choose from, there are also many printer ribbon options. There are options to help prevent from wear and tear, print in color on one side and black on the other, and options for printing single-sided or dual-sided cards.

ID Cards: There are endless possibilities when printing on ID cards. You can choose from PVC cards with varied thickness, colors, and encoding options, paper ID cards that are perfect for creating laminate IDs, meeting name tags, or special event name badges, and even HID cards that are encoded with proximity badge functionality to integrate with your door access or time and attendance system.

Badge Slot Punches: Badge slot punches add ID wear by providing a slot for a lanyard, badge reel, or clip attachments to secure your badge. You can also choose from a 3-in-1 badge slot punch that has slot, hole, and corner punch options. Badge slot punches work with laminated or plastic ID badges.

Cleaning Kits: It’s highly recommended that you clean your ID card printer with a cleaning kit every 700-1,000 ID cards. Because each printer works differently, it’s important that you use the specified manufacturer kit. Each cleaning kit includes a cleaning card that looks like a PVC card but it’s soaked in a cleaning solution. The card is inserted into the ID card printer and cleans all of the rollers. This is a must!

Your ID card printer is a valuable piece of equipment so why wouldn’t you take care of it the way you do your computer? If you have any questions locating the correct supplies for your printer, send me an email at david@idville.com. I’d be glad to help! Maybe your question will be featured in an upcoming newsletter to better assist our customers.

Seven Steps for ID Card Printer Maintenance

by todd 13. December 2011 09:00
todd
An ID card printer is a wise investment in the safety and security of your facility, and you want it to always be in peak performance for its next printing job. To keep your ID card printer in top shape year round, follow our seven steps for printer maintenance.

1. Regularly Clean Your ID Card Printer
It's recommended that you clean your ID card printer every 700-1,000 ID cards. Each manufacturer creates an ID card printer cleaning kit  for its printers. Because each printer works differently, you must use the specified manufacturer kit. As a helpful reminder, you can clean your printer when you change the printer ribbon. Each cleaning kit includes a cleaning card. It looks like a PVC card, but it is soaked in a cleaning solution. The card is inserted into the ID card printer and cleans all of the rollers.

2. Clean the Printer Roller
To print ID cards, a roller pulls the blank PVC card into the printer. This roller collects the dust and dirt on PVC cards so it doesn't travel into the printer. Because the roller acts like a lint roller that cleans the PVC cards, it needs to be cleaned or replaced on a regular basis. Refer to your printer manual for directions to clean or replace the roller.

3. Clean the Print Heads.
The print heads on your ID card printer also need to be cleaned. Your ID card printer cleaning kit includes the cleaning swabs, they look like large Q-tips or a marker, which you use to clean the printer heads directly. Follow your cleaning kit directions to properly clean this important ID card printer component.

4. Replace Printer Ribbons.
For a high quality ID card, replace your printer ribbons as recommended. Printer ribbons have up to a two year shelf life, so you can stock up when you purchase the ID card printer and always have them on hand. Be sure to use the manufacturer's printer ribbons as off brand printer ribbons may not work properly and could damage your printer.

Four Steps to Extend the Life of your ID Card Printer

When you purchased your ID card printer, you made an investment in the safety and security of your staff. Like any piece of equipment, your printer won’t last forever if it’s not cared for properly. Follow our four steps to extend the life and well-being of your ID card printer:

1. Clean It. We recommend you clean your printer with a cleaning kit every 700-1,000 prints to keep it running smoothly. Regular cleanings ensure your ID cards always come out looking beautiful.

Learn more about ID Maker Systems2. Store it in a Case. Protect your printer from dust and potential damage by storing it in a carry case. This is a necessity to protect your printer from the elements if you are transporting it between buildings or events.

3. Give Proper Training. The greater number of people you have using your printer, the more likely it is to be misused or damaged. Train individuals in your office or organization who will be using the printer to make sure it’s handled properly.

4. Use the Correct Printer Supplies. Different styles and models of printers require different printer ribbons and cleaning kids. Be sure to use the right supplies on your printer with our Printer Supplies Locator.

Proper Display of ID Cards Improves Security

by todd 24. January 2011 09:21
todd

Photo ID cards are an important part of a secure facility. But if ID cards aren’t displayed properly, they provide little if any help to your security efforts. To encourage students, staff, and employees to properly display their ID cards, you need to provide the necessary ID card accessories.

Carabiner Badge Reels – This badge reel is designed with a twist-free base that will keep your ID card facing forward at all times.

Strap Clips – The most popular (and affordable!) ID card accessory securely attaches your ID card to anything without permitting it to spin. Clipped to a shirt pocket or lapel, a strap clip will keep the ID card facing forward and easily visible.

Magnetic Badge Holders – Using magnets to display your ID badge is another way to ensure ID cards are always facing the right direction.

If you are still working through the ID card design process, consider making a two-sided ID card. Duplicate the most important information on both sides of the card, so it can be properly displayed even if it twists.

Find the Right ID Card Printer Supplies

by todd 17. August 2010 09:25
todd

Each ID card printer is different and uses slightly different printer ribbons and cleaning kits. Using the proper ID card printer supplies is an important part of keeping your printer healthy and active for a long time.

You can find all the ID card printer supplies you need at IDville by using our System Supply Wizard. We have Evolis printer supplies, Datacard printer supplies, Fargo printer supplies, Magicard printer supplies and Zebra printer supplies to outfit many different ID card printers. Using our System Supply Wizard, you select the make and model of your ID card printer, and our website displays all compatible supplies.

This makes it easier for you or anyone in your office to replace printer ribbons, order new PVC cards or select a cleaning kit for your ID card printer.

An ID card printer is an investment for your organization, and you want to maintain your investment. I recommend you clean your printer every 700-1,000 prints using the printer cleaning kit made for your printer model. Cleaning kits vary in cost and most are in the $30-$60 range. It’s well worth the investment! Cleaning your ID card printer will result in better colors, improved printing, and a longer lasting ID card printer.
